Newborn Sessions

Idaho Newborn Photography

I absolutely love photographing newborns and they very well may be my favorite subject to photograph. The little folds of skin…their sweet “new” smell…the fuzzy hairs all over their body…I love it ALL.

The optimum time I prefer to photograph newborns is in the first 4-10 days of life and I like to schedule newborn sessions within this time frame.  The reason for this is because that is when baby still goes into those deep, deep sleeps and is also very flexible. They still want to curl up into little balls, which helps us get those adorable, squishy newborn poses.  Plus, infant acne can begin to flare by around two weeks.

The best time to book your session is BEFORE baby arrives. Though we obviously can’t schedule an exact date, I schedule newborns by their due date and take a limited number of newborn sessions per month.  I ask that you inform me as soon as baby is born so that we can set an actual date & time. However, even if you are unable to call and book a session before the birth and would like to schedule a newborn session, I will always try to make time in my schedule, when possible.

I do newborn sessions in your home, so there is no need to take your baby out anywhere. I will find the best place in your home near a window for light and don’t be surprised if I ask to move furniture around. I will also shoot around your home/nursery to incorporate a bit of a “lifestyle” feel to your images, capturing baby and family more naturally. Be prepared for the session to last up to 4 hours.  This includes time getting them into those deep sleeps. Things move slowly and there is no rush. We work on baby’s time and I allow ample time for feedings, cuddling, and diaper changes.

As for clothing…I recommend photographing baby in their “birthday suit” for the more posed images of baby alone.  These make for breath-taking and organic photos of your baby. I will bring a small space heater to ensure that baby stays nice and toasty (which also helps them sleep deeply). You and I may get pretty warm, so be prepared to dress in layers! For the family portraits, I suggest a well-fitting onesie for baby that coordinates with mom & dad’s clothing or I will sometimes put them in a wrap or receiving blanket.

After you book your session, I will send you a preparation checklist so you know exactly what to expect on the day of your session and to help things go more smoothly. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any further questions and for full pricing information or to book your session.
